The Pamplemousses CID has initiated an investigation into a case of bank card fraud. It follows a complaint recorded on Tuesday June 18, 2024 to the Pamplemousses police by the victim, a 29-year-old young man. The latter reported that his wallet, containing his bank cards, including a Platinum credit card and a sum of Rs 700, was stolen on the evening of Saturday June 15. Subsequently, he received confirmation that one of his cards had been used in various stores, mainly in a shopping center located in the Grand-Baie region. The alleged thief used “touch and pay” to make several transactions, for a total of Rs 7,369 during the three days following the loss of the wallet.

During the day of Wednesday, June 19, the team of Detective Superintendent of Police (DSP) Buchoo of the Pamplemousses CID arrested a suspect. He is John Mbuthia Kamau, a Kenyan national, currently in the country as a student. Living on a campus in Pamplemousses, he admitted to stealing the victim's wallet who had left it on the counter of a gas station in the north of the island. He then admitted to making several contactless payments with one of the cards. Subsequently, however, the student explained to Pamplemousses CID investigators that he intended to give his version of the facts in the presence of a lawyer. In the meantime, he was detained after a provisional charge of theft before the Mapou court.

“Near Field Communication”

  • NFC (Near Field Communication) technology allows contactless payment.
  • It is a short-range wireless communication protocol.

Contactless payment

  • Radio waves are transmitted at a very short distance between the card (the sensor) and the POS (payment terminal – the receiver).
  • The TPE reader communicates with the NFC chip inside the card.
  • Data is exchanged remotely.
  • The payment amount is transmitted to the concerned bank while providing the beneficiary account to receive the money.
  • All data is exchanged via radio waves, in just a few seconds (3 to 4 seconds) and within a few centimeters (0 to 4 maximum).
  • Use is only possible by bringing the card closer to the payment receiving device.
