During his speech in the National Assembly on Thursday June 13, 2024, Rajesh Bhagwan criticized the 2024-25 Budget presented by the Minister of Finance. According to him, the government only offered temporary measures in view of the elections, without lasting actions to improve purchasing power.

Rajesh Bhagwan is convinced: the population was left hungry following the budget speech by Finance Minister Renganaden Padayachy. “The government has given nothing to the people. He simply returned a small part of the loot amassed because the elections are approaching,” declared the MP from the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM). According to him, the population has not found a glimmer of hope after the difficult years they have experienced. “Pwalon pers fre,” he insisted.

He deplored the fact that there were only ephemeral measures with temporary effects, instead of real courageous actions to sustainably restore the purchasing power of employees. “It’s been a cold shower in the middle of winter,” he said.

He did not hide his astonishment at the announcement about sand mining. He recalled that this practice was banned in 2001 when he was Minister of the Environment, an initiative which, he recalled, allowed the regeneration of the lagoon. According to him, the announced measure does not fit with what is done in the Maldives, coral islands, while Mauritius is a volcanic island.

The MMM MP also wondered if there was really a Minister of the Environment in the government or if he was busy elsewhere, given the state in which the country finds itself. “Just looking at the unsanitary state of the country, as well as the cases of dengue fever and leptospirosis, we have the answer to the question,” he maintained.

He added that the new Environment law was a fiasco. For him, the actions and inactions of this government illustrate that “protecting the environment is limited to putting on a pair of gloves to pick up some trash” in front of the cameras of the national radio and television station.

Rajesh Bhagwan was, on several occasions, reframed by the Speaker for having mentioned a possible return of the Mauritius Turf Club to the Champ de Mars. He was asked to retract his comments. “I don't have time to discuss with you,” Sooroojdev Phokeer made him understand when he wanted to explain more about his comments.
