This Wednesday, June 19, 2024, Chief Justice Bibi Rehana Mungly-Gulbul and Justice David Chan Kan Cheong dismissed the constitutional complaint of Thyagarajen Valayden also known as Rajen Valayden. The latter contested the amendments made to the Local Government Act which allow the postponement of municipal elections until 2025.

In their decision, the Supreme Court held that Parliament has the power to enact amendments to the Local Government Act for the extension of terms of municipal councils.

Chief Justice Bibi Rehana Mungly-Gulbul and Justice David Chan Kan Cheong ruled that Section 12(1A) of the Local Government Act is not in violation of Rajen Valayden's constitutional rights.
