Deenasha Canoo, aged 29, was arrested on December 28, 2023 by elements of the Anti Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) after the seizure of synthetic drugs worth Rs 463,100. She was released under bail before the Bail and Remand Court (BRC) on June 14. This resident of Trèfles, the wife of alleged drug trafficker Parvesh Canoo nicknamed “Paché”, is currently facing a provisional charge of “drug dealing with aggravating circumstances, to wit, possession of synthetic cannabinoids for the purpose of distribution with averment of trafficking”.

Through her lawyer, she requested bail for the second time. However, the prosecution expressed objections, saying she could flee if released and there was a risk of reoffending. In court, Sergeant Issuree returned to the facts surrounding the arrest of Deenasha Canoo which took place during a search in her business where the drugs were found.

In her judgment, magistrate Dr Bibi Zeenat Cassamally noted that in the provisional indictment, the value of the seized drugs was estimated at Rs 1,665,100. However, after analysis at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), this estimate was revised to Rs 463,100. In addition, she mentions that the drugs had been discovered in the accused's business where the public had access. The court also considered that the defendant's passport was seized by the police and that she does not have the right to leave the country since a ban order was issued against her. The magistrate also clarified that she has been in detention since December 28, 2023 and there is no indication as to when the authorities concerned will initiate a formal case against her.

For all these reasons, the magistrate granted bail to Deenasha Canoo under strict conditions. The latter must provide a deposit of Rs 150,000 by check, sign an acknowledgment of debt in the amount of Rs 450,000 and respect the curfew imposed by the court, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. In addition, the resident of Trèfles will have to report twice a day every day, between 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at her local police station. She will have to inform the authorities of her movements.
