The Bishopric of Port-Louis has filed a complaint with the Information & Communication Technologies Authority (Icta). An imposter created a fake profile of Bishop Jean Michaël Durhône, Bishop of Port-Louis, on Facebook to defraud third parties by extorting money from them.

The Catholic authorities were presented with a flagrant case. β€œAn individual posing as Bishop Jean Michaël Durhône on Facebook contacted a Facebook user by message, asking her to pay money into a bank account,” said a press release issued by the Port-Louis bishopric. Informed of this case of fraud, Father Georgy Kenny, vicar general, filed a complaint with Icta. The latter indicated that it would take the necessary steps with Facebook to have this fake account blocked.

On May 13, the bishopric had already alerted the public to the existence of a fake profile of Bishop Durhône soliciting financial contributions from Facebook users by message. The bishopric informs the public that the official Facebook pages of Bishop Durhône and the diocese of Port-Louis are that of the Diocese of Port-Louis. For fundraising, the only page is Coup de Pouce à Mon Eglise, where the account numbers of the diocese can be found.
