Provisionally charged for the murder of his brother, Satish Soodeelah, Gheeanchand Soodeelah, 69, saw his request for release on bail rejected on June 10, 2024, before the Bail and Remand Court. However, an ultimatum was imposed on the authorities concerned to initiate a formal trial against the sixty-year-old before September 26, 2024. Otherwise, the latter will regain his freedom.

In fact, Gheeanchand Soodeelah is provisionally prosecuted for the murder of his brother, Satish Soodeelah, aged 56, before the Pamplemousses court. He had applied for bail at the Bail and Remand Court (BRC).

The prosecution objected, arguing that the sixty-year-old could flee if he is released on bail, that he could interfere with witnesses and that it is for his own safety.

In her judgment, magistrate Dr Bibi Zeenat Cassamally did not grant the defendant's request. However, she ordered the authorities concerned to initiate a formal trial against the latter. Failing this, the sixty-year-old will be released on bail.

The conditions imposed are that the accused will have to provide a deposit of Rs 300,000 by check and sign an acknowledgment of debt in the amount of Rs 900,000.

He will have to report twice a day for seven days (between 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.). In addition, he will have to face a curfew, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. It is ordered to use technological devices only to be in contact with the police.

During the debates surrounding his request for release, Sergeant Abbu explained the circumstances surrounding this case. The sixty-year-old was accused of having inflicted blows on his younger brother, Satish Soodeelah, leading to his death. The tragedy took place on July 4, 2023, in Triolet.

According to the autopsy report, the victim died of a skull fracture. It appears that Satish Soodeelah criticized his big brother for his attitude. The latter often drank and argued with other members of the family. In addition, an argument had broken out between the two men over the items that Gheeanchand Soodeelah was bringing home.

Sergeant Abbu also maintained that the defendant is provisionally charged with a serious offense and that he faces a severe sentence. The investigator also claimed that after the attack, the sixty-year-old left the scene, leaving his brother without any assistance. Furthermore, no one witnessed the incident.

The magistrate, Dr Bibi Zeenat Cassamally, notes that Gheeanchand Soodeelah has been in preventive detention since July 4, 2023. She rejected the sixty-year-old's request. The latter will have to appear before the BRC again on September 26, 2024.
