At least 18 people died and 19 were injured on Wednesday when a bus collided with a milk tanker in northern India's Utter Pradesh state, police said.

“The bus hit the tanker from behind, 18 people were killed, 19 others injured,” Zulfiqaar Ali, from the district police chief's office, told AFP.

The bus was en route to the capital New Delhi from the eastern state of Bihar, NDTV reported.

Road accidents are common in India, where government estimates put the death toll at 168,000 in 2022.

In May, at least 21 people were killed and more than 50 injured in Indian-held Kashmir when a bus skidded off a mountain road and rolled down a slope.
