Expectant mothers can now apply to benefit from the Pregnancy Care Allowance, a one-off prenatal care allowance of Rs 3,000. Indeed, the facility set up by the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) is in effect from this Wednesday, July 3.

This is a measure announced in the 2024/2025 Budget to encourage expectant mothers to systematically follow the necessary medical examinations during their pregnancy. This allowance is paid after the 6th compulsory medical examination by expectant mothers.

At the same time, expectant mothers who are in the third trimester of their pregnancy can apply for the Maternity Allowance, a monthly allowance of Rs 2,000 that will be paid by the government to mothers for nine consecutive months.

To benefit from these two allowances, expectant mothers must submit their electronic application separately to the MRA.

To enable the MRA to make payment of Maternity Allowance as well as Pregnancy Care Allowance, an eligible woman is required to submit a single application and provide the bank account number held in her name or jointly with her spouse, mother, father, legal guardian or any other person.

After providing the required information, a one-time verification code (OTP) will be sent to the provided mobile number, and this code will need to be inserted to proceed with the request.

For Maternity Allowance, the eligible woman is required to indicate her expected date of delivery while for Pregnancy Care Allowance, the eligible woman must indicate the date of the 6th medical assessment carried out as well as the expected date of delivery. No applications will be accepted after 31 December 2025.
