“Is the increase in prepaid mobile packages by Mauritius Telecom a way to finance free internet for students? », asks Dr Avinash Ramtohul. This measure was announced in the last Budget, and the increase came following the extension of the 5G network by the national telecommunications operator.

Dr Avinash Ramtohul, cybersecurity consultant and Labor Party politburo member, says internet access is a necessity, especially with the digitalization of many services.

At Mauritius Telecom (MT), it is claimed that customers are invited to test the 5G network as part of a promotional offer on its various prepaid packages until further notice.

Note that the announcement of the price increase for MT's old mobile data packages sparked many negative reactions from subscribers on social networks. However, the announcement of the extension of the 5G network aroused “real enthusiasm among customers”, according to a press release issued by Mauritius Telecom on Wednesday evening, June 19, 2024.

The telecommunications company therefore announced at the same time a promotional offer on its packages. They therefore returned to the old rates, i.e. Rs 15 for 24 hours, Rs 95 for a week, Rs 315 for a month and Rs 815 for three months. Mauritius Telecom, however, did not specify until when this promotion will be valid.
