QuestionsGeneral-MiscStone fish in Belle Mare
Anonymous asked 10 months ago

I am wondering how common stone fish are in Belle Mare because I am a bit concerned after reading about them, even though I have water shoes.

We are staying in Belle Mare and I stood on and was stung by a stone fish on my 2nd day in Mauritius. I should have worn my sea shoes but didn’t think they were needed as I was only in shallow water on a sandy beach. I was probably very unlucky but the pain from the sting is unbearable (as are the medical bills).
Wear sea shoes and you will be fine. First day in the water today after the sting and wasn’t put off at all

These creatures so camouflaged, they are invisible. So avoid rocky and too much corals. Try snorkeling with fins to avoid putting your feet on the water.

The sugarcane plantations in Mauritius were originally worked upon mostly by slaves. After the abolition of slavery in 1835, the British brought over more than half a million labourers from India, whose descendants form the largest community in Mauritius today.
