Hello everyone! I am a solo traveler planning to visit in February for four weeks. I am considering spending a week on each coast. Can anyone suggest towns or areas on each side that are within walking distance to street food and restaurants? I am also unsure whether to rent a car for the entire duration or just for certain parts. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I am very excited to start exploring!

I recommend you hire a car during your whole stay to save on costs

Get a car for your whole stay. Driving was super easy there. We had this beautiful pink micra for 3 weeks! 😂

I have just been here on my own for 5 days before my friend arrived and had a hire car. I would stay in Blue Bay or Trou ď ‘ea Douce on the south east coast…some great day trips from there to Mahebourg and Central Flaq market and Gris Gris….just look for queues of locals at street food stalls. And Flic en Flac on the west coast…day trips to Le Morne, Chameral, Black River and Port Louis. Nothing is very far really.

I was here on my own in May and i hired a car and did my own thing. It was wonderful. I explored the island in my own time and explored places where the road took me. I would stay in Blue Bay in the South, Tamarin/Black River West, Troux aux Biches/ Mon Choisy or Pereybere in the North. Not to sure about East coast as only done a hotel that side.

The national drink is rum, as Mauritius has a number of working rum factories. The local specialities include vanilla, coffee, coconut, and even chilli-flavoured rum.
