All groundwater sources will soon be brought under the control of the state with the Water Resources Bill. This is one of the major concerns of several industrialists, hoteliers and players in the sugar industry.
A meeting between Business Mauritius, AHRIM, the Chamber of Agriculture and Minister Joe Lesjongard took place this morning for this purpose.

At this stage, it is not yet known whether any amendments will be made to the bill after this meeting.

The ministry claims to have listened to the various stakeholders.

According to Harry Booluck, former director of the CWA, there are nearly a thousand boreholes in the country. He explains that with the new law, individuals will no longer have water rights to groundwater, even if it is on their land.
