The president of the Labor Party (PTr), Patrick Assirvaden, applied to the Supreme Court this Wednesday, May 15, 2024. He requests authorization from the judicial body in order to challenge by way of judicial review the decision of the Speaker, Sooroojdev Phokeer, to suspend him from the National Assembly on May 7, 2024 for six sessions. The case will be called on May 27, 2024 before the Chief Judge, Bibi Rehana Mungly Gulbul.

In an affidavit attached to his request, Patrick Assirvaden claims that the Speaker failed to respect an agreement signed in 2022 concerning the allocation of parliamentary questions by means of drawing lots.

He accuses the Speaker of implementing a method to “manipulate” the ranking of questions, thus favoring, according to him, the interests of the government to the detriment of those of the opposition.

Patrick Assirvaden retained the services of Mes Sanjay Bhuckory, Senior Counsel, Vimalen Reddi and attorney Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum.
