The risk of a tsunami after the powerful earthquake that occurred Wednesday near Taiwan has “largely passed,” announced the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, a regional observatory based in Hawaii (United States).

The underwater earthquake, measuring 7.4 magnitude according to the US Seismological Services (USGS), occurred shortly before 00:00 GMT and triggered tsunami warnings in Taiwan, Japan and the Philippines. Japan then downgraded its alert to a simple warning.
