Seven years after the events, the constable, Shayntish Appadoo returned to the dock on Wednesday April 24. He faces trial for murder in the Intermediate Court.

Shayntish Appadoo, also known as Shane, aged 34, and resident of Mahébourg, is accused of inflicting assault and battery on the late Santa Rao Appadu, aged 79, without intent to kill. However, the septuagenarian did not survive the multiple blows. The events took place on March 12, 2018, in Beau-Vallon. The police officer, who pleads not guilty, is defended by Me Rama Valayden.

Yesterday, Wednesday April 24, Sergeant Digumber presented the defendant's statements to the Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT). In his statements to investigators, Shayntish Appadoo relates that he was assigned to the airport police. In November 2017, he took care of land belonging to his mother and located in Beau-Vallon. Shanta Rao Appadoo, whom he knew as Tinor, resided in a cul-de-sac leading to this land. “Depi mo finn koumans okip terin mo mama a Beau-Vallon, misie Tinor, ki koma ennn granper pou mwa, ti p anpes mwa pas dan sa linpas la,” he indicated.

On March 12, 2018, he went to Beau-Vallon in the afternoon. After parking his car, he took the cul-de-sac to go see his cousin. However, he said, Tinor, who was on the roof of the house, immediately began to insult him, “To pas gagn drwa rant isi twa. Terin deprives her,” he told him, before throwing a stone at him, which he was able to dodge. According to the suspect, the sixty-year-old added: “Mo finn rate twa enn kou me deziem kou mo pa pou rate twa”. Faced with this tense situation, he preferred to leave the area.

The next day, he received a call from a police officer from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) in Mahébourg to inform him that he must go to the police station for investigation. Subsequently, his mother confided to him that Tinor had died. “Mo konsians kler. “I don't have anything to do with Tinor's death,” the suspect argued in his statement. The trial will continue on July 2.
