The flood allowance payment process began on Wednesday April 24 at Port-Louis town hall and other Social Security centers across the country. To date, around a thousand families have received Rs 250 per person. However, many of them expressed dissatisfaction with the amount received.

Victims affected by the torrential rains which hit certain regions of the island on Sunday can benefit from Rs 250 per person. This initiative from the Ministry of Social Security targets exclusively people whose food has been damaged and who have received a report from the police.

“We started by registering requests and we paid Rs 250 per person. Around a thousand families have already received their money,” explains Ismaël Imrit, Commissioner of Social Security. He specifies that the process will continue this Thursday and tomorrow Friday. He recalls that beneficiaries must present a police report, an identity card, proof of residence and the birth certificate of all family members.

During this process, many people expressed their dissatisfaction. For them, the amount of Rs 250 is insufficient given the cost of living. “We lost everything. We couldn't work. The children have nothing to eat and cannot go to school. With Rs 250, we have nothing today. Even ration rice is expensive,” says one of them.
