Is this a settling of scores or a simple argument between inmates? This is what police will have to determine after the attack on Vishal Shibchurn at New Wing Prison on Saturday.
Having obtained his release authorization, he returned to his cell at the New Wing Prison in Beau-Bassin, this Wednesday, May 29, 2024. Since Saturday, May 25, Shibchurn Sitaram Rohiswar, also known as Vishal Shibchurn, aged 49, was admitted to Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital. He suffered injuries after allegedly being attacked by another inmate. A guard at New Wing Prison reported the incident to Barkly police station on Tuesday, May 28.
According to the guard, Vishal Shibchurn, who is currently in remand detention, told him that he had been attacked in the toilets of yard D by another detainee called VR. According to him, the incident occurred around 4 p.m. that Saturday.
Vishal Shibchurn could not have done anything against his alleged attacker. Badly damaged, he had to seek help from the prison guard, before being transported to Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital where he received treatment for his injuries to his face and various parts of his body.
An internal investigation was launched to understand the circumstances of this attack. Appropriate disciplinary sanctions will be taken against the perpetrators of violence after a thorough investigation.
The investigation is being led by Chief Inspector (CI) Rajesh Moorghen of Barkly Police. Is this a settling of scores or simply a usual skirmish between inmates? This is what CI Moorghen will have to determine.
Vishal Shibchurn is currently the subject of a provisional charge of kidnapping, premeditated assault and attempted murder before the Mahébourg court. He and his son Mayur Shibchurn were arrested on February 3, 2024, after the complaint from Marie France Patricia Armandine, residing in St-Hubert, and her uncle, Henry Agathina, from Ville-Noire. The latter used to buy food products on credit from the Shibchurn family. Their bill was Rs 7,000.
According to the complainants, on February 2, 2024, Mayur Shibchurn arrived at the home of Marie France Patricia Armandine to claim the amount due. He allegedly dragged her by her feet, forcing her and her uncle into a vehicle. He is said to have headed home to pick up his father Vishal. The Shibchurns then headed for the Val Forest where the niece and uncle were attacked.
Then, the Shibchurns allegedly drove them home to change clothes before going to a bank to withdraw money. But the transaction did not take place and they were allegedly sequestered at the Shibchurn home.
On March 15, 2024, Mayur Shibchurn was granted bail before the Mahébourg court.
