The Hindu nationalist party of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in the lead with 38.1% of the votes in the legislative elections after the counting of three quarters of the ballots, according to figures published Tuesday by the electoral commission.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its coalition allies would get at least 286 seats, according to the commission's figures, more than the 272 needed for a parliamentary majority in the lower house. But this total is for the moment lower than the 353 seats won by the BJP and its allies in 2019.
