There was an altercation between Veeren Peroomal and an assistant superintendent at the Phoenix prison on June 1. Veeren Peroomal, who is currently serving a sentence for drug trafficking, allegedly spat on the assistant superintendent. This happened during the latter's morning rounds, when he served tea to inmates in Block B. The inmate also allegedly threatened to disrupt prison security. An investigation has been opened to shed light on this incident and to ensure the security of the scene.

At around 7:50 a.m., as the assistant superintendent passed by cell B4, occupied by inmate Veeren Peroomal, he informed him that he was under report for misconduct. The situation quickly escalated and Veeren Peroomal spat in the assistant superintendent's face and threw tea at another guard. Veeren Peroomal then made threats in Creole. “Mo pu fer to lavi vinn amer kan to travay,” he is said to have said.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., the reporter received a phone call from the Phoenix prison control room, informing him that inmate Peroomal Veeren had obstructed his cell door with objects. He had also covered the CCTV camera, preventing any visibility.
