The Financial Crimes Division has jurisdiction to hear the lawsuit filed against Navin Ramgoolam for overpayment. This is what magistrates Abdool Raheem Tajoodeen and Bibi Razia Janoo-Jaunbocus concluded this morning.

This decision follows the motion of former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam. The latter had protested against the jurisdiction of the FCD to examine the case against him. His lawyer, Mr. Gavin Glover, Senior Counsel, stated that there was no directive authorizing the transfer of his client's file from the Intermediate Court to the FCD. The case will be called again on May 6, 2024.

The leader of the Labor Party is facing twenty-three charges of overpayment, under section 5 of the Financial Intelligence and Anti Money Laundering Act. He allegedly accepted Rs 63.8 million in cash over six years, from January 31, 2009 to February 7, 2015.
