Statistics Mauritius report shows increase in cases of theft.

In addition, there has been a decrease in drug crimes.

Flight
The number of theft cases increased in 2023 compared to 2022. The main reason: an increase was noted in cases of “simple larceny”. However, a decrease was recorded in the number of burglaries.

• Theft offenses: from 14,087 in 2022 to 14,519 in 2023
• Thefts from vehicles: from 675 in 2022 to 730 in 2023
• Burglaries: from 1,268 in 2022 to 1,136 in 2023
• Robbery: from 698 in 2022 to 765 in 2023
Convictions
• Theft offenses: from 1,427 in 2022 to 1,792 in 2023
• Burglary: from 974 in 2022 to 1,131 in 2023
• Robbery: from 3,029 in 2022 to 3,472 in 2023

Drug

A decrease was recorded in drug crimes from 2022 to 2023. Of the 4,205 crimes reported in 2023, the majority were cannabis-related.

• Drug offenses: 4,502 in 2022 and 4,205 in 2023
• The market value of drugs seized in 2023: Around Rs 1.20 billion
• Cannabis plants uprooted by the anti-drug squad: 55,726 in 2022 and 54,419 in 2023
Convictions
• Drug offenses: from 2,177 in 2022 to 1,422 in 2023

File sent by police to DPP office

From 2022 to 2023, the number of cases referred by the police for advice to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) decreased from 11,378 in 2022 to 9,711 in 2023.

• Out of 9,711 cases in 2023, 4,823 were sent to the DPP office for an initial opinion after investigation, given their seriousness and complexity.
• The number of cases referred by the DPP's office to the Intermediate Court and the Supreme Court has decreased from 1,029 in 2022 to 987 in 2023.
• In 2023, there were 87 cases brought by the DPP office to the assizes.
• In 2022, there were 139 criminal cases that were subject to appeal and motion compared to 134 cases in 2023.

Case for prosecution

There is an increase in the number of people prosecuted (from 15,903 in 2022 to 25,862 in 2023).

• Aggression: from 1,766 to 2022 to 5,085 to 2023
• Flight: from 3,728 in 2022 to 4,104 in 2023
• Drug-related offenses decreased (from 2,360 in 2022 to 1,761 in 2023)

Arrests

The number of people arrested or detained decreased from 36,128 in 2022 to 28,796 in 2023.

• Offenses of fraud, counterfeiting and corruption: from 1,206 in 2022 to 792 in 2023
• Destruction of property: from 1,233 in 2022 to 859 in 2023
• Flights: from 7,796 in 2022 to 6,098 in 2023
• Drugs: from 3,340 in 2022 to 3,204 in 2023

Admission to prison

There is a decrease in the number of people admitted to prison (5,019 in 2022 compared to 4,937 in 2023). Concerning convictions for non-payment of fines, an increase (from 388 in 2022 to 551 in 2023) is recorded.

• From 2022 to 2023, the number of offenders fined and admitted to prison increased: from 388 to 551
• Admissions for non-payment of fines of Rs 30,000 or less increased from 361 in 2022 to 510 in 2023.
• Two escapes were noted in 2023 compared to 1 in 2022.
• An average amount of Rs 955 was spent daily for each inmate in 2023 compared to Rs 858 in 2022.
