4,229. This is the number of complaints that have been lodged with the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) since its creation. 17 cases were referred to justice. These figures were communicated by Pravind Jugnauth to the National Assembly this Tuesday, June 25, during Prime Minister's Question Time. The Prime Minister was responding to a question from MP, Ashley Ittoo.

These 4,229 cases also include complaints that had been filed with the former Police Complaints Division of the Human Rights Commission. 2,375 investigations have been completed and the rest are under investigation. Among these complaints. 445 complaints were withdrawn.

232 cases were resolved through a conciliation exercise conducted by the IPCC. Seven cases were referred to the Disciplined Forces Service Commission for disciplinary action against police officers.

48 cases were referred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Among them, 17 complaints were filed with the courts, one of which was rejected. Legal proceedings are still ongoing in 16 other cases. 1,643 complaints were dismissed by the IPCC.

Pravind Jugnauth also made a comparison. From 2005 to 2009, 1,149 complaints of police brutality were recorded in the various police stations on the island, compared to 257 between 2014 and June 2024.
