After the seizure of Rs 2.9 million of cannabis in Lallmatie, Heeralall Nundoo, 49, and his nephew Sailesh Dhonow, 27, confessed.

The Brisée-Verdière criminal police are starting to see more clearly the origin of 2.24 kilos of cannabis herb with a market value of Rs 2.9 million seized in Lallmatie on March 20. During a police operation supervised by Superintendent Babajee, two residents of Lallmatie, Heeralall Nundoo, 49, and his nephew Sailesh Dhonow, 27, were caught with bags stuffed with “green gold” which they had tried to clear out in a bush while being chased by the police.

More than a month after this major seizure of cannabis in the east of the island, investigators are deepening their investigations with a view to tracing the origin of these cannabis plants. If at first, the police suspected that they came from the Réunion-Mauritius axis, the interrogation of these suspects allowed the sleuths to note that these seized herbs were cultivated on the island.

Subjected to close questioning, HeeralallNundoo and his nephew Sailesh Dhonow provided more details to investigators on the origin of these drugs. “Mwa ek mo neve nounn rass sa depi enn karo Amaury (Rivière-du-Rempart) pou vande pou nou gagn kass”, explained Heeralall Nundoo to the men of Inspector Roddy Appadoo. His nephew also confirmed his uncle's words: “Kan nou ti al kass nik mouss zonn, nou finn rass gandia dan enn karo Amaury”.

Then, once the harvest was complete, they claimed to have dried the cannabis leaves. Following these confessions, Heeralall Nundoo and his nephew accompanied the police to this field in Amaury for a reconstruction of the facts. On site, the police found traces of these cultivations of cannabis plants in a specific location indicated by the suspects.

During this seizure of herbal cannabis, investigators also found paraphernalia, including scissors and several plastic bags. The suspects admitted that these bags were used to package drugs.

These two suspects, who are suspected of being strong links in the distribution of cannabis for trafficking purposes in the east of the island, are kept behind bars. They are provisionally accused of drug trafficking. The police investigation is continuing.
