Will Navin Ramgoolam be arrested again? Responding to this question from the press this Friday morning, the director general of the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC), Navin Beekarry, declared this: “This is a premature question. We can't say anything about that. Moreover, I believe that the image that we wanted to project that the FCC was created to stop Dr. Navin Ramgoolam is completely bogus and false. »

And he added: “You don't create an institution to arrest a person.”

Navin Beekarry was answering questions from the press following the presentation of the Financial Crimes Commission Act at the Bank of Mauritius this morning.

It should be noted that during a hearing at the Supreme Court on Wednesday, June 26, 2023, Mr. Ali Hajee Abdoula, lawyer representing the former Integrity Reporting Services Agency (IRSA), stated that former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam will face a new application for “unexplained wealth” (Unexplained Wealth Order) under the Financial Crimes Commission Act. This text of law replaces, among others, the Good Governance Integrity Reporting Act. The former Integrity Reporting Services Agency (IRSA) is appealing a summary judgment of Justice Shameen Hamuth Laulloo, rendered on January 12, 2022. The agency responsible for the recovery of unexplained wealth had seen its application for confiscation of the assets seized from Navin Ramgoolam’s home in Floréal on February 6, 2015, dismissed. Dissatisfied, IRSA had appealed.
