The four Mauritian students who won the Tech4Good 2023 competition organized by Huawei, along with their mentor, participated in a trip to China as part of the Huawei Seeds for the Future program. From Monday June 24 to Friday June 28, 2024, they were able to discover the premises and activities of the Chinese firm.

This was a training trip including visiting the exhibition hall and 5.5G class, visiting the Huawei Flagship Store in Shanghai, and digital government, and attending conferences during the Mobile Shanghai World Congress. Every year, more than 50 Mauritian students participate in the training and internship program organized by the Huawei Mauritius office.

“Tech4Good is an entrepreneurship program designed to help young people discover the latest trends in digitalization and explore how digital technologies can solve common social problems. It aims to raise students' awareness of local sustainable development challenges, help them use their Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) skills to explore technically and commercially viable solutions, and help them transform their dreams in reality through intensive training and workshops,” Huawei maintains in a press release.

The Mauritian team won the Tech4Good competition with the project “Smart Agriculture Improving Production through Renewable Energy”. It is composed of Ankshita Maunthrooa, Bhavna Jangli, Michael Chong Foo Yuen and Ravish Gokool. Their mentor is Divakar Ramessur. “Water, fertilizers, pesticides and other inputs are no longer applied only by eye, or uniformly on the field by large-scale agricultural producers. The use of 5G for fast connectivity, the Internet of Things for data collection, and AI micro-cameras with computer vision allows for the precise application of the required quantity at each location, as well as treatment tailored to each plant,” explains Ankshita Maunthrooa, a student.

The Huawei Seeds for the Future program is part of LEAP, a talent detection program launched by Huawei in Africa. The objective is to train more than 100,000 talents in the field of ICT in the region, including Mauritius.
