Dhanraz Bundhooa has his eyes fixed on a photo of little Ashiva in front of him. “Li pa fasil pou get sa… get sa smile sa zanfan-la…” A smile that melted his grandfather’s heart.

On this Friday, June 28 in the afternoon, his heart is in pieces. The taxi driver has just returned from the funeral of his 15-month-old granddaughter. Dazedness, shock, grief took their toll on his face. The day before, the girl died in hospital. She did not survive her injuries, after being hit by her grandfather's car, while he was entering the garage, at the family home, in La Porte, Providence, Poste-de-Flacq, on Wednesday. “Mo prop disan sa… Pa kone kouma inn ariv enn maler koumsa…” he murmurs.

Ashiva, the only granddaughter of the family, was the apple of his eye. Dhanraz Bundhooa recalls the drama of Wednesday, June 26. He recounts that he was driving back in his car, forward into the garage. As the place is on a downward slope, he claims not to have seen little Ashiva at any time: “Toulezour mo rant dan sa garaz-la. When I tann my boyon pe kriye, tro tar zanfan-la ti fini tonbe.”

Little Ashiva's head hit the ground when she fell. Bleeding, she was rushed to Flacq hospital. She was subsequently transferred to Dr AG Jeetoo Hospital, where she died.

Ashiva's grandfather is broken. Little Ashiva had lived with him since she was three months old. The birth of his granddaughter, who blew out her first candle in March 2024, changed his life, he confides.

In Le Dimanche/L'Hebdo, he explains that he had big dreams for his granddaughter. He wanted her to be a banker: “I finished preparing all my finances for my little girl…”

That's not all. He also wanted her to shine in the sporting field. “Enn baby koumsa, li ti pe marse tou pou so laz. Avan enn an an, li ti deza bien for, li ti pe upstanding pou so ti laz,” he said quite proudly. For Dhanraz, it was a sign and since Avish, his son and father of the baby, is also a good athlete, he dreamed of seeing little Ashiva become the pride of the family in this field.

“Mo belfi rakont mwa depi li ena de mwa, li vire dan delo. » Dhanraz then told little Ashiva's parents that they had to introduce her to swimming when the time came. Dreams and hopes that will never come true.

Today, Dhanraz Bundhooa is experiencing terrible grief. The mourning of a dream life for her granddaughter, which adds to the physical, emotional and psychological mourning of her absence. He shares that he saw people who were unknown to him at the funeral, people who came to pay their last respects to the little one: “Ena boukou sofer taxi osi a traver Moris inn vinn rann enn omaz. »

Today, all he has left are his photos and memories of little Ashiva. It's a part of him that has gone with her.

Avish, the father of little Ashiva.

Avish, the little girl's father, can't believe this terrible twist of fate. “Our father is more than just a father and a mother,” he confides. He deplores the fact that some evil tongues blame his father. “For my father, his father is more than a father,” Avish says. For him, little Ashiva came into their lives for a short stay, according to divine will, and the family can only accept this: “He who is ours for a long time, the one who desires, we must accept…”

The police investigation continues

As part of the police investigation, the grandfather of the deceased should be called upon to provide additional information. The theory of an accidental act is favored. The child's parents will also be asked to provide details relating to the moments shortly before the tragedy. Investigators will try to shed light on the circumstances in which the little girl found herself in the garage, when the car driven by the grandfather, a taxi driver, arrived on the scene.
